Mindfulness In Practice: Building a resilient population from the ground up!

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Niagara Hall

Mindfulness: the practice of being aware of your body, mind, and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm (Cambridge Dictionary). With ever-increasing pace and stress in our personal and professional lives, the practice of being present and aware in the moment has become ever more challenging. However the science is clear that mindfulness delivers results beyond personal benefits and produces results for organizations including reduction in absenteeism and boosts in productivity.

This session will outline the circumstances that lead to the creation of a Mindfulness Program for Peel Regional Police, including the underlying factors that triggered the need for stress reduction skills and strategies to be brought into the lives of the members of the department.  The program journey that began with the focus on the individual’s needs has expanded to include both informal and team-based groups across differing operational requirements.  Key drivers of the programs success will be provided to help participants reflect on the benefits that can be gained by diverse groups, to the individuals involved and the organization or workplace as a whole.  This will be a practical session with a “road map” that will allow a concept to be rapidly transformed into a concrete program with relevance and the potential to be rapidly embraced for its many benefits.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key long-term outcomes that Mindfulness teaching and practice will address.
  • Outline both individual and group action steps that can be developed according to the needs and parameters within an organization.
  • Utilize a “road map” provided during the session to customize a strategy for their workplace, that will contribute to a sustainable value proposition for improving organizational drivers.
